Sweet Potato: “Summer’s Hero”

This summer on Mahaba Farms, few plants absolutely THRIVED in the extreme heat like the sweet potato.

I purchased one organic Jewel & one organic Japanese sweet potato from the grocery store & simply placed them into the sandy soil. Just a couple weeks later, I had more sweet potato slips than I knew what to do with! Every week I faithfully separated the slips from the host potato & spread them throughout my growing space. In no time at all, I had clumps of the pretty leaves all around.

I love using sweet potatoes as ground cover. The vigorous vines quickly smother the grass & produce gorgeous purple flowers that the bees can’t get enough of. Bonus: In addition to the popular tuber, the sweet potato flowers & leaves are also edible!

In a few months, I’ll have loads of sweet potatoes popping out of the ground without any intervention from me. That’s my kind of plant! The humble sweet potato will always have a place in my growing space.
