Signs of Summer

The sunflowers bursting from my beds are a vibrant siren of Summer. It seems like Summer just ended & yet here it is, looming again.

While the temperatures increase & my cool weather crops languish as their season comes to an end, I’m reminded of the struggles of starting this farm nearly a year ago in the sweltering heat. Now a bit more established, but with plenty of work yet to be done, I’m entering the Summer fixed more on optimism than dread.

I’ll be working shorter hours in the heat; lots of pre-dawn days ahead. I’ll allow my body more rest, as well as rest the land- filling the grounds with cover crops (to improve the soil for Fall cultivation) & only plants created to exist with minimal intervention in the intense Summer heat. Until the full on heat arrives, I’ll be working overtime to take advantage of the last bit of tolerable weather & get some big tasks checked off my list.

I pray that as the days get hotter, I’ll remember to take time to indulge my curiosity in Nature’s divine design. I’ve shared one such foray in the video below:
