Edible Groundcover

I professed my appreciation for sweet potato plants a couple years ago (https://mahabafarms.us/2023/10/02/sweet-potato-summers-hero/).

Since then, I’ve only become more convinced of the wonders of sweet potato growing.

Now that temperatures are warmer, I am aggressively propagating sweet potato plants & spreading them all over the farm. They’re not just excellent ground cover- actively smothering the native grass & weeds- but a few months after planting the sweet potato vines, pretty purple flowers begin to bloom; heralding the development of delicious + nutritious tubers underground.

Thankfully, the sweet potato vines are easy to clone. I visit one of my many well-established sweet potato patches, snip off a vine & place it in a small bucket of water. Within a week the vines have grown roots & are ready to plant🤲🏾

The Summer heat is no match for the vigorous vine. While awaiting a sweet potato harvest, the sweet potato leaves are a delectable & reliable crop😋

Sweet potato plant multiplication will be an ongoing Summer quest👊🏾

If you’re eager to grow your own sweet potatoes, I’m offering 10 bare root sweet potato slips (similar to those seen in the last photo) for $20 cash (pickup in Indiantown). Email me (kjones@mahabafarms.us) if you’re interested.

Have a great week on purpose!
