Elevator Pitch

I was struck by a recent conversation with an inquisitive college-aged young man in an elevator. He noticed I was carting plants & asked what kind they were.

I told him they were 2 different varieties of avocado.

He nodded affirmatively, then shyly admitted that he always wanted to learn to grow, but is worried he might forget to water the plants.

Without hesitation, I assured him that if he forgets to water the plants, they will get rainwater or drive their taproot deeper for subterranean water…or any manner of ways plants are adapted for survival. I reminded him that the forest grows beautifully without us (humans).

He blushed & looked as if that thought had never occurred to him. When the elevator stopped, I left him still looking dumbfounded.

Nature has many lessons to teach should we choose to tune in. We (humans)- especially those in the Western world- have a false sense of self-importance. It would serve us all (as a collective) to unlearn this.

Have a great week on purpose🤘🏾
